Texas State student assaulted by 5 men inside dorm

Texas State University Police say five men assaulted and robbed a student in his dorm room.

They're asking for the public's help to find those responsible.

As you can imagine, students living on campus are on edge. They hope no one else becomes a target.

Vanessa Smith and Lyric Johnson both live at Smith Hall on the Texas State campus. It's the same residence hall where another student was assaulted. "Texas State University Police received a report of a burglary at Smith Hall on campus," says Vanessa Smith, student.

That's the email they received from the university explaining what happened.

"Nothing really happens over here, so I was really surprised. I was like, 'Wow.' It kind of hit me like, 'Wow.' You think you're safe but it's not as safe as you think it is," says Lyric Johnson, student.

Around 9:35 Tuesday night, a student received a knock at his dorm room door.

When he opened it, he was reportedly assaulted by five men. They then took off with some of his property. That is exactly why Jorge Valenzuela says he is always taking precautions.

"It is scary to know that it can happen to me or my roommate. I know I always take precautions. I don't know if my roommate does but I always lock the door if we're leaving somewhere and I check the little loophole to see," says Jorge Valenzuela, student.

Police have released descriptions of two of the suspects.

One is believed to be a Hispanic male, around 5'7, wearing a white shirt and grey pants.

The other is described as a black male, 6'4, last seen wearing a black shirt and jeans.

Some students believe they may have seen the suspects.

"They were just standing right around here. I guess they were planning; I don't know," says Smith.

"My initial thought is they look kind of sketchy. I always put my keys between my fingers if anything happens, so that's what I did. But, I didn't know there was going to actually be an incident so it was kind of weird for me seeing them there," says Valenzuela.

This is just one of a few incidents that have happened recently at Texas State Campus Housing.

In September, there was an assault at Bexar Hall Dormitory. Then in October, a man was accused of sexually assaulting a woman while he was on a work assignment with the Bobcat Village apartment building. He was arrested and charged.

"I think students should be more careful of who they let in," says Johnson.

If you have any information about the recent assault and robbery, you are asked to call university police.
We were also recently told that officers would be increasing foot patrols at university housing complexes.
