Thief tricks FedEx driver into giving new iPhones with fake ID, say DeKalb police.

Police in DeKalb County are searching for the crook who stole Christmas gifts from a Lithonia family just days before the holiday.

Investigators say the thief managed to intercept a FedEx package delivery on Dec. 20, 2024, within minutes of the driver pulling up to the home. One of the victims tells FOX 5 their doorbell camera caught it happening in real time.

"My brother goes outside…he was yelling out to the FedEx driver like ‘hey, is that our package?’…and that’s when the FedEx driver had let him know that the guy in the car had showed him the ID with my mom’s government name, our address and his picture," resident Kennedy Town recalled.

Ring camera video from that date shows the driver unwittingly handing the package to a complete stranger that police say was driving this dark-colored BMW.

It was a delivery Town says she and her sister were looking forward to—Christmas gifts from her mom.

"She had went to the Verizon store to order me and my sister the new iPhone 16s with the highest gigabytes…we were excited once we found out…so yeah it’s just really sad," she told FOX 5.

Concerned about how anyone got their personal information, they filed a report with the police.

"It’s some type of scam going on around here," she said. "No telling what they could do with that information moving forward."

Town tells FOX 5, from there, they contacted Verizon and were told FedEx needed to declare the phones stolen before they could have them replaced.

When they called FedEx customer care, she says they were told the driver marked the package delivered—leaving them out of two $1,300 phones.

"The driver reported it as delivered showing that the person showed an ID," she said.

In a response to a request for comment a FedEx spokesperson said:

"We are aware of this incident and have worked closely [with] law enforcement to address.

"While we do our utmost to ensure the safe and secure delivery of every package…a shipper can request Hold at Location or Direct Signature Required services, or redirect a package to FedEx Office or Walgreens."

Attempts to reach a Verizon spokesperson for comment on this were unsuccessful on Tuesday.

If you have any information about the car or the person driving it, give detectives a call.
