Thousands of people could get an arrest cleared from their record, paving the way for better jobs or housing, said Fulton County officials.

Chairman John Eaves said the county has identified 2500 people who are eligible to have their arrest record cleared, or expunged, because charges were dropped and they served no jail time or probation.

“These are 2,500 people who deserve a second chance. They need barriers removed to allow them to be gainfully employed, to have housing,” Chairman Eaves said.

The process to expunge a charge usually takes 150 days; now the process can be expedited through a chance to meet with law enforcement officials in one day, on October 1.

People who want to clear an arrest record from Atlanta Police, Fulton County Police or the Fulton County Sheriff's Office can attend a session to determine if they are qualified to have their record expunged; they can then attend the October 1 session.

Rashauld Mincey said he has been turned down for jobs, after a judge dismissed a charge against him after an arrest.

“The judicial system is definitely flawed,” Mincey said. “It's like my time has been taken. And you can't get back time.”

The next session to determine if you are qualified for an arrest record to be expunged is September 15, 6 p.m. at Ebenezer Baptist Church, or 101 Jackson St. N.E. in Atlanta.

People are encouraged to bring a record of their arrest, if available.
