ATLANTA - Veterans at an Atlanta Senior center say they had complained for months about a torn American Flag flying above the center, but nothing was done.
Veteran Keith Cabrero said he told administrators the tattered flag which eventually tore apart was disgraceful to veterans and should be replaced. He said the center seemed receptive, but nothing happened. That is until Cabrero and other veterans expressed his concerns to FOX 5 News.
"I think it is disrespectful. You got people still dying and you goat a flag flying like that?" said Navy Veteran James Gantt.
"There have been too many lives and limbs lost protecting that flag for them to disrespect it as they do," complained Navy Veteran Benny Gordon.
The veterans say there is protocol that goes along with maintaining a flag. It should be hung and brought down every day. The Mills center leaves their flag up all the time, so it is susceptible to all types of weather.
FOX 5 contacted Fulton county government about the flag in disrepair Tuesday afternoon. In less than three hours, a new one was flying at the senior center near Boulevard.
"When we learned the veterans had these concerns, we worked as quickly as possible to get that flag on that pole. We certainly would never want to show any disrespect to our veterans or anyone who appreciates our flag and what it stands for," Fulton county spokesperson Darryl Carver commented.
