Uber testing features to allow Calif. drivers to set own fares

Uber is testing a feature that allows some drivers in California to set their own fares.

The company said the move proves its drivers are independent contractors and not employees subject to state laws.

Uber drivers at three airports can now charge riders up to five times the fare set by the company.

Starting next week, drivers will also be able to charge less than Uber's rates if the company surges prices at times of high demand.
