Viral post about fake $100 bill, stalking panics community
BREMEN, Ga. - Bremen Police are investigating a social media post which has gone viral. As of Wednesday afternoon, the post has been shared by about 20,000 people. It claimed a woman had a fake $100 bill placed on her windshield and then she was followed by someone.
Investigators began early Wednesday morning reviewing surveillance video from the Walmart parking lot, where this incident allegedly occurred, and other nearby businesses to try to get to the bottom of a viral post which has sent panic through the small town.
Tuesday night, a husband posted a picture of a fake $100 bill on Facebook, warning people that someone just put this on his wife's windshield at the Bremen Walmart and then followed her as she left. It is a post which many across the small town have seen.
"Everybody is kind of afraid, we're a small town," one resident said.
"It's scary because this is one of the main Walmart's I shop at me and my kids. And I've been here at night. You don't think about that kind of stuff when your shopping, then you see it. It's scary close to home," said another resident.
The post claimed a truck followed the woman for miles down Highway 78 as she headed to Temple before eventually turning around.
"If one is ever following me I’m going to drive and if they follow me, I've got a gun and will use it," said another resident.
Bremen Police hit the ground running and immediately launched an investigation, pulling surveillance footage from Walmart and surrounding businesses.
"We did observe her vehicle but nobody was following it," said Sgt Joshua Newman.
Newman said they've determined in this case there is no threat to the community, but said they do want people to come forward anytime they feel there is a danger.
"That's what we're here to do, to serve and to protect our community, and it doesn't matter if you feel it's a legitimate call or not that's what we're here for," said Sgt. Newman.
Police do have the fake $100 bill and said if anyone else has received one to give them a call.
They will continue to investigate this incident, but again said at this point, they see no threat to the community.
