Woman killed in Ingles grocery store parking lot
AUBURN, Ga. - The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is looking into a deadly shooting outside of the Ingles grocery store in Auburn. The body of a woman was in the car and a suspect is in custody, according to police.
The GBI says that the woman was found unresponsive when the first officer arrived on the scene. She was pronounced dead not long after.
It was determined that witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots, and a suspect fled from the scene in a vehicle, according to the GBI. The Barrow County Sheriff's Office stopped the suspect 45 minutes later in a white Mercedes, according to authorities. The suspect was then taken into custody.
The shooting occurred at the Ingles grocery store location at 1502 Atlanta Hwy. Police have confirmed that they received a call about the shooting just before 5 p.m.
The GBI was called in to help investigate with the Auburn Police Department.
Investigators surrounded the victim's vehicle for hours, and closed off part of the grocery parking lot.
"I am very glad they caught him. Thank God," said one resident, who has lived here for decades; she tells FOX 5, she does not remember the last time someone was murdered in this town.
Investigators have not released a motive, nor the identities of the victim and the gunman. Investigators said they knew each other.
