MILTON, Ga. (FOX 5 Atlanta) - Georgia Tech fans probably remember Justin Thomas at quarterback for the Yellow Jackets, zooming around the field and into Tech record books. Now -- he's back in town, but with a new team, in a new league and at a new position.
Thomas is playing receiver for the Atlanta Legends, part of the Alliance of American Football, a new league set to open play this weekend. The former quarterback has spent time at receiver with 3 NFL teams and is now looking to show other NFL teams he deserves a chance.
"I have a lack of film at the receiver position," said Thomas. "Coming in, getting meaningful game reps as much as possible I think could help out a lot."
It's a similar story for former Kell High School and University of Georgia defensive back Quincy Mauger. He was with the Falcons for a time, and says he's trying to find a path back to the NFL.
"There's nothing like in-game shape," "You can always train for it but when you put a helmet and shoulder pads on, it's totally different."
The play in the new AAF could be different as well. Players and coaches think fans will see a product on the field similar to what they're used to seeing on Sundays in the fall.
"I spent 17 years in the NFL, and I see guys out here every day I know are comparable to guys we had on our rosters over time," said Legends head coach Kevin Coyle, who spent time on several NFL defensive coaching staffs.
Soon, players will get their chance to put their best work on tape for whomever is watching -- hoping the NFL is among them.
"A lot of these guys have been in NFL camps or on teams, they're trying to prove themselves just like I am," said Thomas.
The Legends play their first game in franchise history Saturday night at the Orlando Apollos.
