Spurs coach Gregg Popovich suffers medical emergency at restaurant

San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich was rushed to the hospital after suffering a medical emergency at a local restaurant earlier this week.

The Hall of Fame coach was at a restaurant in San Antonio on Tuesday night when he began not feeling well, said a person who spoke to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity because neither Popovich nor the team released any details publicly.

What we know:

Gregg Popovich was transported from the restaurant in an ambulance and TMZ reported that officials said they received a call that an older person "fainted."

FOX News reported that the 76-year-old didn’t suffer life-threatening injuries or illnesses, and he was alert by the time he was placed in the ambulance.

What we don't know:

The cause of Popovich’s medical emergency has not been disclosed at this time.

The incident comes after Gregg Popovich had a "mild stroke" in November 2024. He coached five of the team’s games earlier this season before the Spurs organization announced he had a stroke adding that he was expected to make a full recovery.  Popovich later confirmed in February 2025 that he was not returning for the rest of the season.

Spurs assistant coach Mitch Johnson took over as acting head coach that night and wound up coaching the team's final 77 games of the season.

The Associated Press reported that the Spurs have not given any hint if Popovich is planning to return for the start of next season. Popovich is under contract with the team through the 2027-28 season.
