The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention officials said the guidance is in keeping with growing evidence that people with the coronavirus are most infectious in the two days before and three days after symptoms develop.

On Dec. 24, the Georgia Department of Public Health reported 9,869 total confirmed cases, after reporting more than 10,000 positive cases the day prior. The seven-day rolling average of positive cases reached 6,184.9 cases per day, the highest since Sept. 16, 2021.

Omicron has raced ahead of other variants and is now the dominant version of the coronavirus in the U.S. Federal health officials said Monday that omicron accounted for an estimated 73% of new infections last week.
