Instagram, WhatsApp and Facebook were down for some users Wednesday thanks to a wider outage at parent company Meta, reports indicate.

Meta said Tuesday it will start hiding inappropriate content from teenagers' accounts on Instagram and Facebook, including posts about suicide, self-harm and eating disorders.

The Senate Judiciary Committee is holding a hearing scheduled for Jan. 31 where five major social media platform CEOs will testify on online child exploitation.

The complaint also claims Meta knew, but never disclosed, it had received millions of complaints about underage users on Instagram but only acted on some of those accounts.

Neither Google nor Amazon disclosed how many jobs were being cut this time.

The lawsuit also claims that Meta collected data on children under 13 without their parents’ consent.

Meta established a "special operations center" with experts, including those who speak Hebrew and Arabic fluently, to monitor Facebook and Instagram and remove content that violates policies faster.

The sensitive information shared allegedly included computer IP addresses, patient status, prescription information and immunization information.

US Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota and U.S. Rep. Yvette Clarke of New York sent a letter Thursday to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and X CEO Linda Yaccarino expressing “serious concerns” about the emergence of AI-generated political ads on their platforms and asking each to explain any rules they’re crafting to curb the harms to free and fair elections.

Meta said that only public posts were used to train the company's AI tool.

Meta reportedly is hoping to roll out paid subscriptions in the coming months as a way to comply with the European Union's strict data privacy rules.

Amazon, Walmart, Target and other online marketplaces also received letters.
