Portia: Autism Spectrum Disorder
Portia has a candid conversation with parents of the children on the autism spectrum about managing the disorder. Sonja Bennett discusses her experiences with her son Kalin. She noticed something was not right as early as 9 months old, but doctors would not provide a diagnosis until he was 2 years old. He didn't begin to speak in full sentences until he was 7. Dr. Elizabeth Greenfield, licensed psychologist Marcus Autism Center, identifies different ways and methods of communication. Early diagnosis can help. Tap into what motivates an autistic child and use those things to help the child excel and succeed. Sonja says be your child's main advocate. Kalin says autism doesn't have a face and to keep being encouraged and strive for your dreams!
