Community raising money for Cherokee County band director battling cancer
CHEROKEE COUNTY, Ga. - Community members in Cherokee County are raising money to help a high school band director with his fight against cancer.
Garrick Cheyne has been part of the Canton community for 20 years and has been a band director at Cherokee High School since 2010.
What we know:
According to Cheyne's GoFundMe, the band director was recently diagnosed with colon cancer.
Crystal Cheyne, Garrick's wife, wrote that they are waiting for results from a CT scan he had on Monday, but believe the cancer is "somewhat short of stage 4."
His first surgery is scheduled for Feb. 5. The money raised by the community already covers his first medical bill.
What they're saying:
"We continued to be awed by your support," Crystal Cheyne wrote on GoFundMe. "I am SO inspired to be my best every day through this journey for all of you and for many great days ahead!"
What you can do:
More than 200 people have raised more than $20,000 of the fundraiser's $30,000 goal.
