Jimmy Carter: A look back at his life

Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter died on Dec. 29, 2024. FOX 5 Atlanta took a deeper look back at his life and how he became the 39th president.

Before Coco Gauff became the tennis champion she grew up to be, she had a chance meeting with former President Jimmy Carter that she'll never forget.

Gauff, who is competing in the 2025 United Cup singles and mixed doubles with Taylor Fritz, took to social media after news broke of Carter's death at 100 years old.

On X, Gauff shared a tribute to Carter, reminiscing about a time she met the Georgia politician in an unusual place.

"We were on a road trip and stopped in the middle of nowhere Georgia at a Mcdonald’s to get some food. And randomly he was there using the urinal next to my dad lol," Gauff wrote.

Gauff said her family kept seeing people "suited up and armed" but just thought it was because they were in the middle of nowhere. Turns out, they were actually Secret Service agents, which she learned when her dad rejoined the family.

"Eating our food with my mom and my dad walks out the bathroom with the former President like they were long time friends," Gauff said.

Gauff said Carter was extremely nice to her.

It was "a memory I will never forget," she said.
