Gunshot detection tech leads to 2 arrests

Brookhaven police are crediting new gunshot detection technology for two recent arrests at an apartment complex.

Police in Brookhaven are crediting new gunshot detection technology for helping them with two recent arrests at a local apartment complex.

On the morning of Dec. 6, officials say the Flock Safety Raven Gunshot Detection System alerted them to gunfire at the complex.

Within four minutes, officers say they responded and found a suspicious vehicle running nearby with its windows covered.

Police body camera footage showed the moment officers arrested the two people inside the car.

"Keep your hands up in the air. Don't do anything crazy alright?" the officer told the two occupants of the car in the footage. "The gun's on her side."

Investigators say they found a firearm and spent shell casings at the scene.

The woman was charged with reckless conduct and loitering. The man was charged with loitering and providing a fake name.

"This incident underscores the effectiveness of technology in keeping Brookhaven safe. We want to remind everyone that firing guns in our community is both dangerous and illegal," the Brookhaven Police Department wrote on Facebook. "Our commitment to ensuring the safety of all residents remains steadfast, and we will continue to leverage innovative tools to prevent and address crime."

As the new year approaches, the department wants to remind residents not to celebrate with gunfire because, "what goes up, must come down."
