Weather causes flight delays on peak travel day at Atlanta airport
ATLANTA - Christmas may be behind us, but the holiday travel season is still in full swing, and Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport officials are ready for a very busy weekend.
Friday is expected to be the peak of the entire holiday travel period with an estimated 327,000 passengers expected to pass through the Atlanta airport throughout the day.
As of 8:30 p.m., FlightAware.com reports that three flights were canceled and 326 flights were delayed, which averages out to about 8% of the total traffic expected.
Due to the storms, the FAA advised of ground delays just over a half hour.
In total, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) anticipates screening about 40 million passengers nationwide through Jan. 2, with nearly 4 million of those travelers expected in Atlanta.
To deal with the crowds, the airport has put measures in place, including 18 new passenger information totems displaying security wait times. Airport officials say they have the staff in place to handle the rush.

The changes seem to be working. As of Friday morning, travelers were dealing with security wait times that ranged from eight to 20 minutes.
As always, much of the airport experience comes down to being prepared for the crowds.
"I knew it would be busy. That's why we got here three hours early and were going to sleep at the gate," traveler Shaquana Cook told FOX 5's Lindsay Tuman.
Airport officials recommend everyone to have a plan for parking, to get to Hartsfield-Jackson with time to spare, and to pack correctly so that there are no hiccups during the security check.
