Man shot by Gwinnett County police officers identified

A Gwinnett County police officer shot a man who allegedly pointed a gun at him while he was responding to a 911 call overnight.

According to Gwinnett Police, the incident began around 11:30 p.m. when a 911 caller reported hearing approximately 4-5 gunshots followed by screaming coming from a residence in the 3600 block of Holland Drive in Snellville. Officers arrived on the scene and heard arguing coming from inside the home.

When police got to the scene, they reportedly heard arguing coming from the house.

As the officers were preparing to go up to the home, officials say a man, later identified by police as 32-year-old Edwin Mendez, walked out the front door armed with a handgun.

According to investigators, a uniformed officer standing in the home's front yard identified himself, and the man immediately pointed a gun at the officer.

The officer fired one shot, hitting Mendez.
