Fire reported at troubled Palmetto USPS facility
PALMETTO, Ga. - The United States Postal Service confirmed a fire broke out at the Palmetto Regional Processing and Distribution Center (RPDC) over the weekend. That facility has been blamed for many of the mail delays North Georgia has experienced over the months.
It happened on Sunday. USPS claimed it was a minor electrical fire that was quickly put out by the local management team.
There were no injuries reported, nor damage to mail, packages or the facility itself.
Problems at Palmetto USPS center
The Palmetto Regional Processing and Distribution Center opened in February 2024. Since then, there have been multiple reports of delayed mail, medication and packages.
In May, Sen. Jon Ossoff visited the sorting facility after grilling Postmaster General Louis DeJoy over the delays. He said he came by to apply pressure on the people in charge.
"USPS is letting Georgians down," Sen. Ossoff said at the time. "It is my role, it is my obligation, it is my duty to hold them accountable."
The following month, representatives Mike Collins, Austin Scott and Andrew Clyde took a tour to see what was going on.
"When you have elderly people that are getting their checks in every month, or their prescriptions in, and we really didn't have a good answer for them. And so, that is where we started putting the pressure on here to make sure we get some sort of answer," Rep. Collins said.
"They had some labor issues that was part of the cause of the delay, but I think they have overcome that now and are on their way up," Rep. Clyde said.
It's not clear whether the fire is expected to affect any efficiency at the facility.
