Pedestrian killed after crash involving Gwinnett County patrol car

Georgia State Patrol troopers and Gwinnett County detectives are investigating a deadly crash involving a police vehicle and a pedestrian early Monday morning. 

The crash happened at around 1 a.m. on the 1700 block of Beaver Ruin Road between the entrance to Interstate 85 and Shackleford Road.

What we know:

Officials say an officer who was on patrol hit a pedestrian crossing the road near a gas station.

According to the police department, the man was not crossing at the crosswalk.

After the crash, officials said the officer tried to help stabilize the man before medics arrived. The man died on the way to the hospital.

The road was closed for hours early Monday morning while investigators worked at the scene. It has since been reopened.

What we don't know:

Authorities have not released the pedestrian's identity or whether the officer could face any charges in connection with the accident.

What they're saying:

"This is absolutely a reminder to all of our citizens to be vigilant and be mindful of where you're crossing the street at and to be mindful of traffic at potentially 1 or 2 o'clock in the morning," Gwinnett County Cpl. Dustin Martin-Young said.
