What happened in New Orleans?

The death toll continues to rise in New Orleans. As of Wednesday evening, 15 people were confirmed dead and dozens more were injured on Tuesday at around 3:15 a.m. when a driver plowed a rented vehicle through a crowd celebrating the New Year on Bourbon Street. New Orleans officials said that driver, identified as 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Jabbar of Texas, then carried out a shootout with police.

Jabbar was ultimately killed during the exchange. Two officers were injured.

The FBI has called the incident an act of terrorism during a press conference held Wednesday afternoon, and believe he was not working alone.

New Orleans Sugar Bowl postponed

The Sugar Bowl, originally scheduled for Wednesday night at the New Orleans Caesars Superdome, has been postponed.

Tens of thousands of fans traveled to the Big Easy for the highly anticipated New Year's Day game between the Georgia Bulldogs and Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

New Orleans terrorist suspect

Officials have identified the New Orleans terror attack suspect as 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a U.S. citizen from Houston, Texas.

Jabbar has been confirmed to be a U.S. Army veteran who served for several years. He also graduated from Georgia State University with a B.B.A. in Computer Information Systems in 2017, according to the institution. During that time, he was a Georgia resident.

President Joe Biden held a press conference Wednesday evening, revealing the suspect had posted videos on social media that support a circulating claim that he was inspired by ISIS. The FBI also reported that an Islamic State group flag was recovered from Jabbar’s vehicle, along with weapons and a potential IED. Additional IEDs were reportedly found in the French Quarter.

FBI Houston investigation follows New Orleans terror attack

FBI Houston confirmed a joint investigation with the Harris County Sheriff's Office near Hugh Road and Crescent Peak Drive in north Houston. They said it was connected to the New Orleans attack.

Officials said they planned to be on-site for several hours and warned people to avoid the area.
