Students to demand Georgia universities divest from Israel at Board of Regents meeting

Dozens of students are planning to protest at a University System of Georgia Board of Regents meeting on Tuesday afternoon to call for divesting from Israel.

The group Georgia Tech Alumni for Palestine says that students will hold a silent sit-in at the monthly meeting in Atlanta.

According to organizers, students from the Georgia Institute of Technology, the University of Georgia, Georgia State University, Kennesaw State University, Emory University, Morehouse College, Spelman College, and Oglethorpe University will take part in the protest.

The aim of the protesters is to get the university system to fully divest from Israel and set up a permanent review committee to examine how to invest ethically.

The act of activism comes months after multiple protests on Georgia campuses calling for a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas War.

At Emory University, officers arrested 28 people after a group set up an encampment on campus. The school has since changed its policies and banned students, staff, and faculty members from camping and protesting on campus between midnight and 7 a.m.

Sixteen students who were part of the group Students for Justice in Palestine were arrested at the University of Georgia following a protest. Six of the students arrested were suspended through the fall semester and barred from campus.
