Man in custody after manhunt, SWAT standoff in Clayton County townhome community

A man is in custody following an hours-long manhunt and standoff in Clayton County.

Officials say the incident began when officers tried to pull Cornelius Lamont Davis over for an aggravated assault charge out of Atlanta.

Instead of stopping, police say Davis sped away and nearly hit an officer, eventually leading police to the Chatham Townhomes on Chatham Drive near Dougherty Place.

According to investigators, Davis barricaded himself in his townhome and refused to speak with police for hours.

When Clayton County SWAT members broke the door down, Davis was nowhere to be seen, but police say they quickly learned that he had broken into the adjoining vacant home by making a hole in his attic wall.

After checking out the neighboring home, officers found Davis hiding in the closet.

"Our officers were on him so quick, he didn't have time to go out the back door," said Maj. Steve Wright of the Lovejoy Police Department.

Davis was taken into custody without incident. FOX 5 cameras were there when officers walked him out of the home and put him in a police vehicle.

He's facing several charges, including at least two aggravated assaults - one of which was reportedly on a police officer.

Neighbors react to Clayton County SWAT standoff

Neighbors say they were shocked to drive into their street to find dozens of police officers waiting outside the townhome.

"No one could get in or get out," neighbor Ginger Rose said.

Rose called Davis a "very nice gentleman" and said she was very surprised to hear there was a warrant for his arrest.
