Police in Atlanta said a U.S. Marshal was injured Friday afternoon while trying to capture a fugitive near the West End Mall.

According to Inspector Jim Joyner, the Marshal is expected to be released from Grady Hospital on Saturday evening. The injuries are non-life threatening, but will not be back on duty for a while. APD and the US Marshals are still looking for Shusta Gumbs.  They've also learned there were several people in the area who assisted with his getaway and charges are pending.  They still believe Gumbs is in the Atlanta area and say he should be considered armed and dangerous.

It happened around 3:20 p.m. near Poole Place and West Whitehall. A spokesperson for the U.S. Marshal Service said task force members were trying to capture Shusta Gumbs, 38, after he failed to appear on weapons and narcotics charges in Douglas County. Investigators said Gumbs allegedly rammed a task force vehicle and struck the Marshal when he was approached by members of the task force. He then fled the scene.

The name of the Marshal has not yet been released.

U.S. Marshals and local law enforcement are performing a search for Gumbs near the area where his car was eventually found.

Anyone with information on Gumbs whereabouts is asked to call the U. S. Marshals at 770-508-2500, or Atlanta Crime Stoppers at 404-577-8477.
