Murder mystery: Who shot two people in a Stone Mountain apartment?

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. - A double murder mystery has some residents on edge at a Stone Mountain apartment complex.

It was Monday night around 8:45 when police said the roommate of Samuel White and Sylvia Watson found them dead in a hallway in the apartment they shared in the building of The Park at East Ponce complex.

“I heard ‘pop, pop, pop,’ like gunshots,” said Derrick Williams, a neighbor.

Williams said he’s not sure the gunshots he heard a few hours before the bodies were discovered were connected to the double murders or something else.

“I always hear them but it sounded close, so I’m like dang what’s going on,” said Williams.

DeKalb County police said there is no indication of a home invasion or murder suicide in the deaths of White or Watson. Police said both were shot in the upper torso.

“I want to hear that they didn’t come from in here, god forbid,” said neighbor Alicia Byers.

She and others around the 5500 building said they want answers about who killed Mr. White and Ms. Watson and why.

Police said at this point they investigating to determine a motive.

Byers said the mood around the complex is tense.

“They’re not liking it, they’re talking a lot, I talked to a guy for twenty minutes this morning,” said Byers.

Some residents with children said they have big concerns.

“People have kids and other people have lives every day. I feel it’s just messed up man,” said Marcus Harris, a father of a young child who lives next door to the apartment where the murders occurred.

He and others said the victims, 55-year-old Samuel White and 57-year-old Sylvia Walton had lived at the complex about two years.

Neighbors said Mr. White worked at a hospital, Ms. Watson at a nursing home. Now police are trying to find their killer.

“Condolences go out to the families. I just don't know how it works, I couldn't imagine it happening to my people,” said Derrick Williams.

Late Wednesday night a friend sent FOX 5 News photographs of the two victims. He said Samuel White was from Pontiac Michigan.

Police do not have a description of a shooter. Anyone with information is asked to contact the DeKalb County Police Department.
