Police: Man rapes teen, flees from officers

Police are searching for a man who raped an 18-year-old girl who police said has the mental capacity of a 10 year old.

"Anytime any suspect preys on one who has a diminished mental capacity, that just speaks to the level of depravity that they have and we want to get him off the streets as soon as possible," said Gwinnett Co. Police Cpl. Deon Washington.

Investigators said it happened April 23 at the Paramount Apartments, 4200 block of Pleasant Lake Village in Duluth. Police said the 18-year-old girl was visiting a friend at the apartment, but when the friend left, investigators said Jamaal Cooke raped the teen. Police attempted to arrest the 22-year-old man, but he fought back and ran from the complex.

"Detectives went back to the location in hopes of making contact with the suspect and they actually did," said Cpl. Washington.  "A brief altercation ensued and the suspect was able to flee the location on foot."

Investigators said Cooke frequents the area and has no vehicle. He has an extensive criminal history in Metro Atlanta, according to police.

Resident at the Paramount Apartments are on high alert after learning what police said took place.

"I used to let them play and now I stay out here anytime they are outside," said a mother of two who did not want to be identified.

Neighbors said they will be more vigilant and watch out for each other.

Cooke faces rape, aggravated sodomy, and felony obstruction charges. A $2,000 reward is being offered by Crime Stoppers for Cooke’s arrest. Anyone with information is asked to call 404 577- 8477.
