Sheriff: 17-year-old brought gun to Newton High School

A 17-year-old student has been arrested after bringing a gun to Newton High School, and attempting to evade arrest, according to the Newton County Sheriff's Office.

The student was charged with weapons in school safety zone, possession of a handgun under age 18, theft by receiving, and obstruction.

Police say the school was on a brief lockdown due to an anonymous tip that a student on campus had a weapon. Officials went to the student's classroom, and the student fled from the rear parking lot, according to authorities.

The student was apprehended by the school resource officer and arrested, according to police. The student allegedly threw the weapon while evading arrest, but the weapon was recovered, according to the sheriff's office.

The student was taken to Newton County Detention Center where he was being interviewed by investigators.
