Two people were hurt when a small plane lost power and crashed Tuesday afternoon.

Cherokee County Sheriff's Office said the Piper Cherokee 140 Airplane lost power shortly after takeoff. Authorities said a student was flying the plane at the time. The instructor took over about 200 feet in the air and tried to return to Runway 5 at the Cherokee County Airport, but ended up 50 feet down an embankment before crashing into a fence.

Both instructor and student had gotten out of the plane by the time emergency officials arrived at the scene. Firefighters said they only complained of bumps and bruises, but were taken to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital to be checked out.

The cause of the incident is under investigation.
